What to do in Mount Gambier with kids
Explore the playgrounds
The Valley Lakes Precinct is home to a great adventure playground with wheelchair facilities. The Railway Lands has a nature play area perfect for the little ones and Vansittart Park also has a playground you won’t want to miss. Further afield from Mount Gambier we suggest you visit Millicent’s mega playground in the domain, which is about 30 minutes drive from Mount Gambier and look forward to a new playground being completed on the foreshore of Port MacDonnell early in 2021.
Feed the possums
The Umpherston Sinkhole is one of our beautiful icons of Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast where you can play amongst the extensive plantings of the sunken garden during the day, and then come back at dusk to feed the wild resident possums when they come out and play. They love fresh fruit and veggies and it’s also a great place for humans to eat; either picnic or use the BBQ facilities on site.

Explore on a bike

You can follow the city’s Rail Trail, which has been built for pedestrians or cyclists on the disused rail corridors throughout the city. More adventurous riders can explore the Mountain Trail at the stunning Valley Lakes, and the BMX track and Pump Track are located at Hastings Cutting Reserve are high quality tracks open free to the public. There’s also a brand new pump track at Port MacDonnell only 30 minutes away at the Southern Rock Lobster capital of Australia.

The signposted walk from the car park to the top is about 900m and is estimated as being of moderate difficulty – or great for wearing little bodies out!

Brown Bay is a beautiful fishing, swimming and surfing spot located about half an hour from Mount Gambier between the Victorian border and Port MacDonnell. It’s popular for water sports enthusiasts and the white sandy beach is just as beautiful on a cold winter’s day if you’re looking for a laid-back spot to relax. You can drive onto the beach and there’s a toilet, outside shower and picnic table under shelter and free camping if you have your self-contained van with you, but beware as it is an unpatrolled beach.
